About Le Souk Ceramique

Le Souk is named for the village marketplace, or “souk” in Arabic, where traditional arts and crafts, objects of great beauty and distinction, are bought and sold.  With that artisanal background in mind, Le Souk Ceramique strives to keep that spirit alive by continuing to make all of our ceramics by hand.  All our artwork is done free hand, meaning we use no decals, stencils or tracing and certainly no machine painting.  The Mediterranean countries are all replete with their own histories of pottery-making and in a world a modern machinery, Le Souk Ceramique is trying to keep a little of the old world alive.

About Tunisia

With an ideal climate and a long and gentle coastline, Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa, nestled just across the Mediterranean Sea from Italy. Tunisia has, for over 2000 years, witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitives and adventurers, to conquer and claim, as warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers, each leaving behind a part of their culture there on the threshold of the Sahara. Aware of their rich historical heritage, Tunisians today exhibit a genuine interest in and respect for others as evidenced in their moderation, tolerance, and hospitality.

  • Our latest designs:

Sauvage: Italian-esque finesse.  We’ve only made a little bit so far but it’s proven to be a huge seller for the few lucky stores that had in on the floor in December.  More is on the way for Feb. 2010 and beyond but it’s selling out fast.

Tula:  Brand new and in stock now.  A very bright, happy, optimistic floral pattern for 2010.  Perfect to have on the store floor as we leave winter and enter spring.

Solena:  A year old now, but one of our biggest hits in years.  For those of you that haven’t tried Solena yet, please consider it for spring.  It’s proven to be very, very popular.
